Lufthansa flying high after 30 years at Birmingham Airport
Lufthansa has marked 30 years of flights from Birmingham by reaching new heights with passenger figures for the first quarter of 2016 showing 3.3 per cent growth compared with the same period last year.
The figures were released by Christian Schindler, Lufthansa Group Regional Director for the UK & Ireland, when he visited Birmingham to join in the pearl anniversary celebrations.
“This continued growth confirms the full service airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS and Brussels Airlines) continue to be among the leading carriers at Birmingham”, says Christian Schindler.
“It proves once again that the majority of air travellers value the long standing commitment Lufthansa Group has to our Midlands passengers along with our reliable full service offering. Lufthansa, SWISS and Brussels Airlines will all continue to be attractive for business and leisure travellers. They cherish the option to start their travel directly at Birmingham airport, avoiding the longer transfers to airports in the London area. And, as always, customers can be assured of the top-notch service, the high quality and the reliability of the Lufthansa Group.
“On 1st April 1986 Lufthansa arrived at Birmingham providing 13 flights a week, with a daily Frankfurt service operated with a Boeing 737 aircraft and a six day a week service to Düsseldorf using a 28 seat Embraer 120 Brasilia aircraft. Today, when we include the operations of our low-cost carrier Eurowings, the Lufthansa Group offers 106 flights a week at Birmingham and carried a total of 861,000 passengers in 2015 and Eurowings are also adding direct flights to Hamburg and Dusseldorf.
“Around half of the passengers flying with Lufthansa Group airlines from Birmingham are continuing to take advantage of our quick and easy onward connections at our hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Brussels.”
Passengers departing from Birmingham during the 30th anniversary celebrations were entertained by a traditional German oompah band while they enjoyed Lufthansa branded cupcakes and sparkling wine.
William Pearson, Aviation Development Director, Birmingham Airport, said, “Many congratulations to Lufthansa for reaching this 30 year milestone at Birmingham Airport, particularly at a time when passenger numbers are at a record high. Serving more than seven million people over the last three decades, Lufthansa has become the first choice for many travelling from the Midlands region to Frankfurt, Munich and beyond to more than 300 destinations on the Lufthansa Group’s global network. We thank the team for their loyalty and commitment to Birmingham and look forward to working with them for many more successful years to come.”
