Flybe Celebrate Launch of Twilight Flights to Reykjavik and Ibiza

Flybe, Europe’s largest independent regional airline, has celebrated the start of its new summer ‘twilight’ flights to Reykjavik Keflavik and Ibiza that will operate through to 7th September, 2014, flights to Reykjavik reverting at the end of October to a daylight schedule for the winter.

The inaugural flight to Reykjavik was especially important as it marked the first scheduled service to the Icelandic airport from Birmingham and the flight was welcomed by a traditional water arch. Amongst the passengers was a group of high profile UK journalists accompanied by Flybe’s Routes Director, Fred Kochak who, on arrival, together with the crew and fellow travelers, was honoured to be greeted by the UK Ambassador to Iceland, His Excellency Mr. Stuart Gill.

Mr. Gill, said: "I am delighted to be here to welcome the inaugural Flybe flight from Birmingham to Reykjavik. British tourists are coming to Iceland in increasing numbers – more now than from any other nation – to enjoy Iceland’s spectacular sights all year round. It’s one more example of the ever closer links between our two countries and I congratulate Flybe on becoming the newest airline to fly here."

Mr. Kochak commented: “Flybe is truly proud to be the first to offer scheduled flights between these two great cities, linking Birmingham and Reykjavik with regular flights for the first time. The enthusiastic welcome we have received has been overwhelming and we are pleased with the way in which both of our new twilight routes have been received by those wanting to enjoy the very best of the wide variety of experiences that Iceland and Spain have to offer. We look forward to welcoming all our Flybe twilight customers on board this summer.”

Every year, thousands of party animals head north to Reykjavík - the world’s northernmost capital city that, throughout the long summer nights when the sun never truly sets, becomes the city that never sleeps – while sun-seeking party-goers choose to fly south to Ibiza. Flybe’s twilight flights to both destinations have been timed to arrive whilst the vibrant, fun-filled nightlife scenes are still in full swing.

However, outside of the vibrant club and bar scene, there is plenty to see and do and those on the first Reykjavik flight were looking forward to being ‘wowed’ by visits to the world-renowned geothermal area around the Geysir hot spring, and to Langjökull, Iceland´s second largest glacier where even in the height of the summer, it’s still possible to have fun snowmobiling!  The famous Blue Lagoon spa is also another highlight of any visit to the city.

On the sporting side, Flybe’s flights to and from Reykjavik will be especially full at the beginning of July when football teams and their supporters from Northern Ireland and Iceland take full advantage of the new route for the first qualifying rounds of UEFA’s Europa League Cup, using the airline’s convenient connecting flights to Belfast City through Birmingham.

Flybe is expecting to attract high numbers of leisure travellers to its flights, looking for an affordable way to escape to Ibiza and Reykjavik on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday evenings.
