Arriving at Vienna Airport

Located about 12 miles from Vienna city centre, Vienna Airport is in a convenient spot for travelling into the city, and with a range of transport options your trip is sure to start smoothly.

The CAT (City Airport Train) is the fastest link to the city. A non-stop service, the CAT will take you directly to the main train station Wien-Mitte in only 16-minutes! You can pre-book these tickets online or buy them at the counter in the Arrivals Hall. Alternatively, Vienna’s underground service, the S-Bahn, travels to several destinations around Vienna. There are also plenty of bus connections available. Buses to the city centre run 24/7 and only take 20 minutes.

If you’d prefer to relax after your flight, taxis are plentiful, and you can hop in one at a taxi rank outside of the Arrivals Hall. There is even a limousine service if you really want to travel in style! Car hire is of course an option, and there are numerous companies available at the airport if you’d like to be more independent whilst in Vienna.

Pre-book your transfer with HolidayTaxis and avoid the queues when you arrive.

What to expect in Vienna

Named as the city with the highest quality of life four years in a row, Vienna should be on your radar. In the summer months, tourists flock to the city and enjoy the warm weather, and while the atmosphere and weather are hot, so are the prices. Assume that accommodation and flights will be more expensive during the high season.

The national language in Austria is German (there is no such thing as ‘Austrian’), although accents and some vocabulary differs. The local Viennese dialect (Wienerisch) is quite different to the accent in Germany so even if you can speak German, you may find it difficult to understand locals. Most people speak English though, especially in the tourist areas!

May and September are great times to visit Austria as the weather is still mild, but the city is missing the hordes of tourists and sky-high fees. While there are expensive tourist spots, a trip to Vienna is affordable when you compare to other European cities like London and Paris.

Culture in Vienna

Home to numerous museums, palaces, opera houses and the world’s oldest zoo, Vienna is not to be missed. Referred to as one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe, there is more than enough to keep you occupied on your break to Vienna.

MuseumsQuartier is one of the largest cultural sites in the world; here you can find enough art and architecture to last you a lifetime. If you’re looking for music, you’ve come to the right place. The Vienna Danube Island Festival is the largest open-air festival in Europe, and it’s free. The festival includes concerts, cabaret, sports, educational talks and more – something for everyone.

If festivals aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to spend your time in Vienna. The whole city is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you will never be far from a beautiful building. If you’re a foodie, don’t forget to indulge in local Viennese cuisine. Choose from wiener schnitzel, Austrian goulash or Erdäpfelsalat (Austrian-style Potato Salad). For incredible culture and coffee, Vienna is the perfect choice for a city-break this year.
