What to expect in Tenerife

Tenerife is the island of a thousand experiences and can be visited at any time of the year. Get lost in nature, relax on the beach, hike the Teide volcano, shop, play golf or walk the old town cobbles; there’s something for everyone in Tenerife.

The official language spoken in Tenerife is Spanish. You’ll find most locals are able to speak some English, especially in the popular tourist areas. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take some time to learn some simple Spanish phrases for when you’re in town though. Dos cervezas por favour (two beers please).

Nicknamed La Isla De La Eterna (the island of eternal spring), Tenerife is mild all year round. Expect an average of 24°C during summer and 17°C during winter.

Culture in Tenerife

The Canary Islands were conquered by the Spanish at the end of the 15th century. Since then Spanish influence has dominated the traditions, customs, and general culture of these islands, including Tenerife.

From festivals to food, Tenerife has a lot to offer. The biggest annual festival on the island is the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is held each February in the city of Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas. The carnival is the second-biggest in the world after the Rio carnival in Brazil and follows a chosen theme each year. Previous themes have included The Thousand and One Nights, The Roaring 20s, Hollywood Musicals and Magic. The carnival is a ten-day fiesta of street processions, floats, games, music and dance competitions. Book your holiday in February to experience this magical event.
