Arriving at Split Airport
Split Airport, also known as Resnik Airport, is the international airport serving the city of Split, Croatia. It is located 19 km from Split city centre.
There is a Croatia Airlines bus that meets all regularly scheduled flights to Split. The buses are organised by Pleso Prijevoz and the city stop is at Sv Duje at the southern end of Split port, a short walk from the intercity bus station and the train station.
Another option to get to Split is by passenger ferry. A new service connects Split Airport with Split Port and you can board the ferry about 300m from the airport. The boat whisks you to Split port in 20 minutes, and, if you’re continuing onto Bol or Hvar Islands, journey time is a little over an hour.
You can also rent a car at the airport, take a taxi or even get an uber.
What to expect in Split
Croatia’s second largest city, Split, is a great place to see Dalmatian life as it’s really lived. With a buzzy vibe, this energetic city has just the right balance between tradition and modernity. You’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants and shops thriving among the atmospheric old walls of Diocletian’s Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments). Its lively atmosphere coupled with beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea and backdrop of dramatic coastal mountains make it a great place to visit.
The official language in Split is Croatian but English is widely spoken.
Split has a Mediterranean climate. There is not much rain, however November is the wettest month. The best travel time to Split in Croatia is May, June and September. The summer is wonderfully hot with warm evenings and little to no rainfall.
Culture in Spilt
Diocletian Palace is one of the best-preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world and is where you’re likely to spend most of your time in Split. Don’t expect a palace though, this is the city’s living heart. Labyrinthine streets are packed with people, bars, shops and restaurants. It’s a stunning citadel and Game of Thrones fans will be interested to know that some of the series was filmed here.
Saint Dominus Cathedral is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in the entire world. If you want to have the best view of the city, climb up to the Bell Tower – it is a unique experience that you won’t want to miss!
The cuisine in Croatia reflects the cultures that have influenced the country over the course of its history. On a Dalmatian plate, you’ll find an abundance of fresh or cooked vegetables, homemade cheeses, and of course lots of fish and other seafood such as clams, squid and even cuttlefish or lobster.
