We have seven car parks on-site, all within walking distance of the airport terminal or accessible via a free shuttle bus. If you’d rather take public transport, there are plenty of options to choose from. Birmingham International train station is just outside the airport, with the free and frequent Air-Rail taking passengers to the terminal in and just minutes away. You can also find public buses and coaches that travel from all over the country and drop you right at the airport.

Need currency for your trip abroad?  Whether you’re looking to top up your Euros before you fly, or withdraw a few UK pounds for your return, head over to our Travelex stores conveniently located in the Arrivals area of the terminal building and Departures Lounge.  If you prefer, you can pre-order your currency and get next day collection if you order before 3pm at Birmingham Airport.

Take advantage of the many services at Birmingham Airport by ensuring you arrive at least 2 hours before your flight to Kefalonia. If you’re keen to get through security as fast as possible, we recommend pre-booking access to our Express Lane – it’s designed to enable passengers to quickly pass through the security area. Once through, there’s no better way to kick start your holiday than with a lovely meal at the airport. We’ve got an array of bars, cafés, and restaurants – from Factory Bar and Kitchen and Giraffe to Wetherspoon, so there will be a restaurant to suit everyone’s needs. If you’d prefer to grab something for the plane try Wrapchic or Pret a Manger.

What to expect in Kefalonia

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia has a convoluted coastline marked by sandy coves, limestone cliffs and beautiful bays. Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow twisting roads. Meanwhile, the mountainous interior is dotted with wild meadows and vineyards – you won’t be hard pressed to find the perfect photo opportunity.

Kefalonia’s official language is Greek, which has been continuously spoken for over 3,500 years across the Ionian Islands. Basic English is widely spoken in tourist hotspots, but we recommend picking up some Greek words or phrases to impress the locals.

Kefalonia enjoys a Mediterranean climate with sizzling temperatures and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. For a quieter visit and cooler weather, travel in winter when average temperatures are around 13°C.

Culture in Kefalonia

Apart from the island’s stunning beaches, breath-taking landscape and natural wonders, Kefalonia offers an interesting history. A devastating earthquake of 1953 destroyed much of the island’s historic Venetian architecture, but the Venetian and British Rule have left their influence – seen in attractions such as the Venetian Castle, Bridge Devosetos and the Castle of St. George. You will also find statues of some of the people who have left their mark on the island such as the Statue of Andrew Laskaratos, the satirical poet, on the beach in Lixouri.

One of the best things about holidaying in Greece is the food and Kefalonia has an abundance of fresh, Greek cuisine for you to try. As well as the traditional Greek dishes like moussaka, tzatziki and fava, make sure you try produce local to the island. Don’t leave without trying local dishes such as ‘meat pie’ and ‘bakaliaros with agliada’, a lemony fish dish you’ll want to order more than once.
