Arriving at Burgas Airport

Burgas Airport is the second largest international airport in Bulgaria and is located in the southeast of the country, approximately 10 kilometres from Burgas city centre. If you travel by car, you can arrive in the city in less than 20 minutes.

You can hire a car from Burgas Airport, or alternatively take a taxi to your destination. A 24-hour taxi service is available at the airport, and you can book online in advance.

The cheapest option for onward travel is to go by bus. Bus No 15 will take you to the central bus station at Burgas, and, from there, you can catch a bus or a small minibus to the resorts located to the south and to the north of the town.

Pre-book your transfer with HolidayTaxis and avoid the queues when you arrive.

What to expect in Burgas

For most visitors, the port city of Burgas (sometimes written as ‘Bourgas’) is no more than a transit point for the historic towns further up and down the coast. But if you care to explore it, you’ll find beaches, salt lakes and cultural attractions. Nature lovers will adore the four lakes just outside the city, which are a haven for bird life and offer a plethora of activities.

The city is lively and well-kept with a pedestrianised centre, a long uncrowded beach, a gorgeous seafront park, and some interesting museums.

Bulgarian is the official language spoken in Burgas but most locals will be able to speak English in the tourist hotspots.

In Burgas, the summers are warm, dry, and mostly clear and the winters are very cold and partly cloudy. Most holidaymakers visit in the summer where festival season is in full swing and the temperature of the lakes is most inviting.

Culture in Burgas

Burgas has so much more to offer than its easy accessibility to party resort, Sunny Beach. If you spend time in the town, you’ll find cultural attraction aplenty.

The Gramophone is a 2-m (6.5 ft) sculpture in the city centre, one of the symbols of Burgas. Legend has it that if you turn the handle and listen carefully, you will hear the name of the one who loves you. Check out the Concert Hall, State Puppet Theatre and Opera House, all offering a diverse programme throughout the year.

Burgas also boasts its fair share of festivals. The annual Sand Festival sees artists create fantastic sand sculptures. Every year the figures are united by a single topic: cinema characters, safari, fairy tales, carnival, etc. and are displayed all summer at Ezero Park. Another summer festival, the Spirit of Burgas Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in Bulgaria, attracting top national and international rock, hip-hop and experimental acts and DJs.

Bulgarian cuisine is underrated and delicious. With creamy white cheeses, crispy fried foods and entrées baked in clay pots, you’ll be drooling just looking at the menu.
