The first port of call for most visitors to Shanghai is The Bund, a mile-long stretch of waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River. The best way to appreciate the buildings is to have a walk along the Bund. Roaming among the architectural complexes, you'll have a better understanding of the century-long charm of this city.
Don’t miss exploring Yuyuan Garden, translated to ‘The Happiness Garden’, with a unique design and many bridges, pools, archways and pagodas to explore. These traditional gardens in the Old Town are one of the best in China.
In the western part of Shanghai, you’ll find Jade Buddha Temple. Although the history of the Jade Buddha Temple is not very long, the old-time and classical architectural style makes it unique and inimitable in this modern city.
Shanghai is a happy hunting ground for foodies. A must is the famous soup dumpling, Xiaolongbao. Other recommendations include Di Shui Dong ribs, braised eggplant and The M Pavlova.
Stay at the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel, the hotel is the world’s first ‘groundscraper’. Without spoiling too many of the surprises, the duplex suites offer ‘underwater’ views.
There are numerous climbing spots in Shanghai, but the West Bund Climbing Wall in Xuhui district is free and in an open space. This is one for the brave, as there are no lockers or changing rooms and no equipment provided. You just turn up and climb. Even if you don’t want to give climbing a go, it’s still a relaxing spot to pack a picnic, watch others conquer the wall and take in the riverside views in a trendy part of town.
Visit “The Venice of The East” otherwise known as the city of Suzhou. A vast network of interconnected canals and waterways spread out across Suzhou, which, coupled with the plentiful blossom and bonsai trees growing around every corner, give it a gorgeously serene ambience. You can lose yourself for hours taking in the scenery and wandering across the traditional bridges before heading over to look at some traditional Chinese gardens.
