Destination guide: Johannesburg

Visiting Johannesburg for the first time?

A Safari Day Trip from Johannesburg: One of the most popular things to do when visiting South Africa is to go on safari. Book a daytrip to Pilanesberg National Park from Johannesburg and try and spot the big five – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo.

Head to Constitution Hill. One of South Africa’s most important historical sites. Hear about some of the country’s high-profile political activists including Nelson Mandela who was once held here.

Just 45 minutes from Johannesburg is the Cradle of Humankind, an area in South Africa where many fossils, tools, and other traces of early humans have been found. These traces provide valuable information about human evolution.

If you want a bird’s-eye view of Johannesburg, the 50-storey Carlton Centre is the place to go.

Looking for something different?

If you’re after adrenaline rather than R&R, try Ama Zwing Zwing, a great zipline experience under an hour’s drive from the city. For hiking and biking, make a beeline for the forty square kilometres of Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. You can camp overnight and follow the Rustenburg Hiking Trail for a couple of days or explore one of the shorter routes.

Want to go further?

And what if I want to escape the city for a while? Magaliesberg mountain range is particularly popular with Joburgers – head to Hartbeespoort Dam to get a cable car straight up into the mountains.

If you have more time, catch a short flight to Cape Town. Enjoy the craggy mountain range and urban edge, all rolled into one!

Want to know a secret?

Monchichi in Marshalltown based downtown, is a very minimal space, all stone, with hanging lanterns. If you don’t want to be inside, there’s an outside space that isn’t on the road. It’s a good spot to catch local DJs.
