Authorisation for such flights must be requested from Air Traffic Control and will only be provided after a safety impact assessment.

Please note it can take up to 48 hours to access and process any requests. All flights must be conducted in accordance with the DRONE CODE and on application you will be provided with a contact number to call on the day of the flight to obtain an Air Traffic Control clearance.

Background

Drone use is growing at a rapid rate in the UK and our skies are some of the busiest anywhere in the world.

To ensure that those who wish to fly drones are equipped with the information required to do so legally and safely, without endangering others, the CAA has created https://dronesafe.uk/. 

This website is to help ensure that drone users have current and accurate information that will help ensure that whilst they’re having fun, they’re not posing a risk to any other aircraft or people.

Legislation

The government has introduced a restriction around every protected aerodrome in the UK.

At Birmingham Airport this is a 2.5NM radius cylinder around the aerodrome combined with two 5KM rectangular zones starting from the ends of the runway, all of which extend up to 2000ft above the surface.

It is illegal to fly anywhere in this area without permission from the Air Traffic Control Unit at the aerodrome.

It is recognised that commercial operators and recreational users may, on occasion, wish to operate drones within the confines of the Flight Restricted Zone (shown above) established around Birmingham Airport.
